For some reflexive modernity theorists, the aestheticization of society is associated with ‘aesthetic dedifferentiation’, which involves the intensification and destabalization of symbolic images. In turn this is associated with an intensified self‐reflexivity with regard to gender. The theorist most closely associated with reflexive sociology in this sense is Pierre Bourdieu. In his work, reflexivity is understood as a strategic agenda, that of utilizing the tools of the discipline in order to demystify sociology as a power saturated social practice. Finally, reflexive practice involves an awareness that the social world, and therefore social research itself, are made through reflexive practice.
